OLIVER HEALD MP HELPS EMS STAIRLIFTS TO LAUNCH MAJOR CHARITABLE INITIATIVE
Feb 20th

Back from left to right: Mick Armstrong, Thomas Sergeant and Jonathan Muir of EMS Stairlifts. Front: Veronica Lee and Oliver Heald MP.
Hertfordshire based company EMS Stairlifts was joined by local MP, Oliver Heald on 3 February to mark the launch of their STAIRLIFT ANGELS INITIATIVE. Conceived by directors Jonathan Muir, Mick Armstrong and Thomas Sergeant, this philanthropically motivated initiative has been designed to give back something meaningful to the communities they have served for around the last twenty five years.
Commenting on the STAIRLIFT ANGELS INITIATIVE Mick Armstrong said: “While local authorities, housing associations and charities fund the cost of stairlifts for hundreds of people, unfortunately there are many others who, for a whole variety of reasons, are refused such financial assistance and it is precisely for this reason we have set up this scheme. We plan to donate one stairlift, inclusive of all fitting, service cover and warranties, worth thousands of pounds, completely free of charge every month to those applicants we consider most deserving.”
Fellow director and head of sales Thomas Sergeant made it clear that the STAIRLIFT ANGELS INITIATIVE is not a publicity seeking stunt and said: “EMS is a very successful company that has grown substantially every year and this initiative has been embraced by all the staff, everyone is involved. We intend to honour this sizeable commitment for the foreseeable future, supplying free stairlifts around the region we operate in for many years to come.”
When asked about selection criteria and how the lucky recipients will be chosen, Jonathan Muir replied: “We hope to hear about people who have given much to their communities throughout their lives, perhaps having been involved with charitable endeavours or served their country and who now find themselves needing help but unable to afford a stairlift or obtain a funding grant. It is those people we feel are deserving of our help now.”
Visiting EMS Stairlifts for the first time, Oliver Heald, long serving MP for North Hertfordshire remarked enthusiastically:: “I was impressed that Baldock has the country’s major showroom for fully operational stairlifts. This is a huge advantage for customers and I spoke to one of my constituents who was very pleased to see and try the stairlifts in action.”
This constituent was Veronica Lee from Hertford, who, along with her son Chris, certainly got more than they bargained for during their visit to the showroom last week. After visiting the EMS Stairlifts website Chris had brought his mother over to the Baldock showroom and was delighted to discover it was the best, if not the only, place to try a large number of fully working stairlifts. However, neither of them was expecting a personal welcome from their local MP and an opportunity to discuss one or two constituency matters in addition to choosing a stairlift.
EMS Stairlifts
Operating since 1988 EMS Stairlifts is one the UK’s oldest stairlift specialists and has a wealth of experience in the sale, installation, service, maintenance of hoists, stair, floor, step and bath lifts. Based in Baldock Hertfordshire EMS Stairlifts serves the Home Counties region and owns Europe’s largest showroom of full size and fully operative stairlifts.
Theraposture Rotoflex bed allows sculptor & charity worker Ernie with MS to remain at home
Feb 20th
Even though he lives with severely restricted mobility due to Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and spinal problems, Ernie Burton, 65, from Bexleyheath East London, has been able to continue living at home with his wife Val thanks to a revolutionary rotating and profiling Rotoflex bed supplied by Theraposture Ltd.
Based in Westbury, Wiltshire, Theraposture is a privately owned, family run business and has been the leading specialist in bespoke assistive furniture for over three decades. Theraposture provides a unique, niche service in providing electrically operated beds and chairs that are individually specified to client’s personal needs. The business takes pride in a caring and understanding approach that offers a real choice in function, size and aesthetic design.
Ernie is one of a multitude of individuals who have been able to remain living at home thanks to a specialist assistive bed from Theraposture. Ernie has lived with MS since 1963 however it has only been in the last 10 years that his condition has drastically deteriorated. MS is a complex, unpredictable and progressive neurological condition that affects around 100,000 people in the UK and has many symptoms that can, amongst others, severely reduce mobility.
Before taking early retirement at 53, Ernie was a highly skilled roofing surveyor and worked regularly across London on many prestigious properties such as The House of Parliament, Admiralty Citadel and The Victoria and Albert Museum. After he finished his career, Ernie continued with his passion for sculpture, model making and gardening and continues to this day with his charity work and support of the MS Society. This has been made possible by his ability to remain in the comfort of his own home and through the selection of a Theraposture Rotoflex bed. His four children and five grandchildren can still enjoy visiting their Dad and Grandad at home and the family do not have the worries associated with nursing care costs.
The Rotoflex bed from Theraposture is a unique solution to an everyday problem – getting legs into and out of bed. This is achieved by a unique rotational action that will sequentially transfer the user from a sitting to a sleeping position with the touch of just one button. In Ernie’s case, his single Rotoflex delivers independence as it is a real alternative to hoisting and carer assistance. In his situation the bed is paying for itself many times over as the cost of care is so high these days. The Rotoflex can be encompassed into one half of a double combination bed if preferred and rotate to either side ensuring it is compatible with any room situation. In addition to its unique rotation, the Rotoflex also has a profiling and variable height function with the latter helping to achieve a standing transfer if needed.
Ernie’s bed, as with all Rotoflex’s from Theraposture, has been supplied with –
• A surround which matches his home decor
• High quality memory foam mattress
• Two side rail handles
• Two sets of fitted sheets with a sewn in pillow case
• A battery backup for up to four separate devices
• Five year full warranty (subject to service agreement)
In addition to these features, this Rotoflex has been installed with a lifting pole as repositioning in bed can be difficult for Ernie. This optional lifting pole with overhead adjustable handle provides increased leverage and reduces the strains associated with moving in bed.
As he studied sculpture at Sidcup Art College and has exhibited several times, Ernie’s home contains an impressive collection of clay and plaster sculptures and pots. His other passion for model making and horticulture has resulting in an array of model ships being displayed and a front garden which won the ‘Bexley in Bloom’ competition several years ago. As unfortunately his motor skills are now very limited and he uses a powerchair to remain mobile, Ernie channels his energies into work for the MS Society. Ernie explains: “Supporting the MS Society, namely the Bexley and Dartford branch, is very important to me. It was one of the very first branches to be established around 1965 and I have supported it from day one with members now numbering around 200. We are finding it increasingly difficult to raise funds to help people living with MS as these uncertain economic times continue and are always looking to raise awareness of the disease. My wife was the Chair for over seven years and I am now responsible for organising transport of individuals with MS around the local area whilst managing our society’s charity-funded holiday home in Eastbourne. Being involved with the society still gives me great satisfaction and know this has only been made possible through the support of my beloved wife and the comfort and independence of remaining at home.”
Ernie concludes: “The Theraposture Rotoflex bed has been so fantastic, it has changed my life. It was only following a demonstration of the Rotoflex at the Queen Mary’s Hospital that I ever knew something as revolutionary as this existed and could make such a massive difference to my lifestyle. Before owning a Rotoflex, I commonly had spasms in my legs when trying to get into bed and sitting up was becoming impossible. With the profiling capability I now have in bed, I can easily achieve the perfect position and enjoy a comfortable and undisturbed night’s sleep. Pressure is relived on my back and swelling in my legs is reduced. Exiting or entering the bed is controlled as I can be transferred to and from a seated position via a standing aid that reduces discomfort and back strain for my wife. I can move from a seated to lying position with the aid of the rotating and profiling action of my Rotoflex bed which is superb, I could not live here without it. I wish systems like these were available elsewhere such as hotels or hospitals, as the lives of so many people living with MS would be improved no end. Thank you Theraposture.”
TGA BREEZE 4S AND CONVERTED SUPERSPORT COMPLETE EXTREME MOBILITY SCOOTER BBC TOP GEAR CHALLENGE
Feb 19th

1. Daniel Stone, TGA Managing Director (right) with injured war veteran Nick Gibbons on a HD Breeze 4S GT, which completed the extreme BBC Top Gear mobility scooter challenge 2. BBC Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond powers ahead on a highly customised Supersport during the extreme mobility scooter challenge broadcast on 29 February 2012
A Breeze mobility scooter kindly supplied by TGA alongside a highly customised Supersport, have both successfully completed an extreme challenge on a Welsh mountain in association with Help for Heroes for the BBC Top Gear programme (broadcast 19 February 2012, BBC Two, 8pm).
TGA is a family-run business based in Sudbury, Suffolk, with a proven reputation for providing the widest range of quality mobility scooters across the UK since 1985. Not only are its products renowned for delivering exceptional ‘life value’, its market-leading customer service representatives have recently won the prestigious BHTA (British Healthcare Trades Association) Team of the Year Award 2011.
As a leading specialist in mobility, TGA was approached by the BBC with a view to loaning a scooter for the programme which Daniel Stone, TGA Managing Director explains: “TGA is well known across the UK for supplying the most reliable and robust scooters in the marketplace, however when the Top Gear researchers contacted us, I knew this forthcoming challenge would push our products to the absolute limit. The challenge was to involve a dramatic race between two teams up a rugged mountain on the Glanusk Estate in the Brecon Beacons, Wales. Three disabled war veterans in association with the charity Help for Heroes were to compete against the BBC Top Gear presenters who would ride radically customised second hand scooters. The BBC needed robust scooters with proven off road capabilities and their researchers had obviously reviewed several larger scooters from a variety of suppliers before selecting the TGA Breeze 4S. They deemed it a model capable of tackling extreme rural terrain even though it is primarily engineered as a robust and luxurious scooter for everyday use. We supplied the GT version that has wider wheels for extra traction and stability, plus heavy-duty batteries to give maximum range and power. We felt confident it would perform to the best of its ability and deliver 100% reliability, however we were a little apprehensive as the filming date approached anticipating a challenge which would undoubtedly be extraordinarily extreme.”
Approximately 8 million TV viewers tuned in to watch this episode which involved a race up the side of this well-known, rugged Welsh mountain. To reach the summit involved tackling inclines of 1-in-3, tracks covered in boulders, soggy thick mud and an overall distance which would test battery capabilities far beyond the norm. The race began around 8:30am on a cold January day at the base of the mountain and quickly unfolded into the usual format associated with Top Gear features of this nature. Riding the Breeze, Nick Gibbons and the other ex-soldiers took a more tactical, planned route to the top instead of the direct route taken by the TV presenters. James May and eventually Jeremy Clarkson became immobile as the terrain proved too tough for their chosen machines, however Richard Hammond continued on his Supersport which was modified with caterpillar tracks and a petrol engine.
Daniel continues: The Breeze is a very rugged scooter but is designed for everyday use, whether that is a trip to the shops or a journey in the countryside. The environment featured on the programme was extreme and the other products it competed against were solely designed for this type of terrain. The ground conditions were particularly difficult as the combination of frost followed by rain had produced unrelenting, slippery surfaces exacerbated by steep inclines. Working as a team, the Help for Heroes soldiers managed to overcome most obstacles and the Breeze only needed assistance in a couple of situations. The wider wheels and extra torque made all the difference and Nick said its stability was incredible even when turning on inclines. Bearing in mind one of the BBC crew’s 4×4 vehicles became stuck several times during the ascent and the other two products tipped over luckily without injury to their drivers, I am really proud of how our TGA scooter coped under these exceptional circumstances. It remained stable throughout the ascent and proves why it is first choice for so many less able individuals across the UK looking for a safe scooter they feel comfortable on.”
Daniel concludes: “As daylight began to fade, I was delighted to witness the ex-soldiers reach the top of the mountain with the HD Breeze GT looking in great shape and still having enough battery power for the return journey. Some time after the Union Jack was raised and flares were lit to signal their victory, Richard Hammond did eventually reach the top on his converted Supersport but the disabled veterans had already won the challenge. Out of six scooters that began the race, only four finished of which two were TGA based-products, which is testament to their strength, reliability and build quality. During the filming back at the Top Gear studio, the challenge was well received by all the audience however the perceived high cost of mobility scooters was highlighted. The TGA Breeze was cheaper than the other two scooters featured on the hillside, which consisted of a powerful 3- wheeler and a 4WD powerchair both of which were more specialised off-road machines. However the Breeze compared favourably and remained stable and safe even when negotiating slippery slopes and rugged terrain.”
“Richard Hammond suggested that car manufacturers should begin producing scooters to reduce the price but this is not really a fair comparison as the car industry is generally about mass produced products and massive volumes. Mobility scooters are different to cars in so many respects, they are in fact medical devices designed and made to very different criteria. Saying that though, many thanks to the BBC who helped us demonstrate the amazing capabilities of the Breeze model. When you consider this TGA Breeze is not a specialist off-road vehicle, its achievements on BBC Top Gear are even more impressive.”
Harrogate gets going for young disabled drivers

If you are young, disabled and keen to get behind the wheel, or newly disabled and want to research adapted motoring options, Get Going Live! is just for you.
If you are young, disabled and keen to get behind the wheel, or newly disabled and want to research adapted motoring options, Get Going Live! is just for you. This exciting one-day event will help you start driving and plan for your first car.
Taking place at the Yorkshire Event Centre, Harrogate on Saturday 28th July, Get Going Live! is organised by two national disability charities, Disabled Motoring UK and Mobility Choice, the team behind the Mobility Roadshow. The William Merritt Mobility Centre in Leeds is also playing its part in delivering this important service to novice disabled drivers.
Young people with disabilities can gain a driving licence at 16, a year ahead of those who are not disabled. That’s great news, but where do you start?
At this free one-day event you can test drive adapted vehicles and get expert advice from organisations and companies with a wealth of experience.
You must be aged 14 to test drive one of the adapted vehicles on a safe on-site road system, accompanied at all times by a professional driver. Younger prospective learners are welcome to practise transferring, familiarise themselves with controls and may also travel as a passenger with an instructor.
Around the driving there is a fun action-packed programme of activities, still being finalised, but already confirmed is a 7m climbing wall with over 20 routes to the top.
Last year’s inaugural Get Going Live! day at Donington Park was voted ‘simply fantastic’ by participants. “The beaming smile just says it all!” said Lyn Williams of her son Jordan, aged just 14, on his return from test driving a Chrysler Voyager from his wheelchair. “This will give him the confidence to get his licence when he’s eligible and go on to gain his independence – this is a fantastic event to give young people such a thrilling experience.”
“It was awesome – I can’t wait to be 16!” said Jordan.
Further dates and venues for Get Going Live! 2012 to be announced very soon – check out www.getgoingnow.org for the latest news and to register, or call 01508 489 449.
Mobility Roadshow Ambassador Jack to carry Olympic Flame
Jan 26th
Mobility Choice, the charity that organises the Mobility Roadshow is delighted that one of its Ambassadors, 20 year old Jack Pegram, has been selected as an Olympic Torchbearer. Jack will be carrying the Olympic Flame in East London on Sunday 22nd July, five days before the Opening Ceremony.
“We congratulate Jack on his selection, especially as we believe there were on average 11 nominations for each Torchbearer place and the selection panels faced some very tough decisions,” said Jacqui Jones, Executive Director, Mobility Choice. “We first met Jack in 2006 when his bright idea for an automatic wheel cleaner won the 12 to 14 years category in the first year of our national schools Ready Willing & Mobile competition. He later joined our panel of competition judges and has supported the Mobility Roadshow every since.”
Jack is a full-time wheelchair user. He is a second year student at Brunel University studying Sports Science and was awarded a sports scholarship. It was essential to his independence that he was able to drive. His first time behind the wheel was during a visit to the Mobility Roadshow where he test drove three different models and spoke with a variety of specialists about the best adaptations to meet his particular needs. Three driving years later he is about to move on to his second vehicle.
A keen sportsman, Jack has represented England in the Wheelchair Football World Cup and also played badminton for England. His focus now is table tennis. He has played for GB and is a current member of the GB Development Squad. He won Silver in last year’s World Junior Championships in Dubai, competed in the British Open and plays in the first team for his university in the British Universities League.
The Mobility Roadshow 2012 takes place on 21st 22nd and 23rd June at the East of England Showground, Peterborough. For more information and to register your interest in advance visit www.mobilityroadshow.co.uk or call 0845 241 0390.
BBC Top Gear’s Richard Hammond races army converted TGA Supersport mobility scooter through Wales
Jan 20th
Being a Top Gear presenter is probably every man’s dream job and now it’s clear to see why.
The show’s famous faces Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May spent today racing through a town centre on mobility scooters. The trio were in Abergavenny, South Wales as they tested out the mode of transport.
Surrounded by several onlookers, and no doubt fans of the BBC motoring show, Clarkson, 51, looked rather cold as he sat aboard his red scooter. Wearing jeans, a brown jacket and a grey scarf, he didn’t look too enthusiastic as he rode up the high street. It’s no surprise that he wasn’t enjoying the experience as he is used to testing out some of the world’s fastest and luxurious cars. Or perhaps his sombre mood was due to the fact that the show has come under fire due to Clarkson’s antics on the Top Gear India special. The BBC has refused to apologise following ‘hundreds’ of complaints from British and Indian viewers.Clarkson caused outrage after he stripped down to his underwear when the show had in fact promised to highlight the beauty of the country.
His co-host Hammond looked in far better spirits today as he raced along the street in an army-inspired scooter. This scooter looked like an adapted TGA Supersport scooter which is extremely popular across the UK for it’s ‘Harley Davidson’ style looks.
The 42-year-old, who is the youngest of the three presenters, also wore jeans and looked determined to win the bizarre race.
Grey-haired May appeared less excited and was riding a rather different mobility scooter that was complete with several pairs of wheels.
The threesome were filming an episode for the latest series of Top Gear but would probably much rather be back behind the wheel of a sports car
Designed to reflect the characteristics of a motorcycle, the TGA Supersport provides a visual statement along with rugged performance. One of the more established products from TGA, the Supersport has an impressive and trusted heritage for stability, manoeuvrability and the capability to handle most off road situations. Whether providing independence in town or in rural settings, the owner has the advantage of a top speed of 12km/h (8mph), a range of 32km (20miles) and a high ground clearance of 125mm (5”). If further distance is required then batteries can be upgraded to heavy duty versions which then provide a range of up to 48km (30miles). The Supersport will transport a user weighing up to 160kg (25stone) and is capable of negotiating a 21% incline. The Supersport is available in two finishes either in aqua marine or black and chrome with a long chassis and extra wide seat versions available. Optional accessories include a lockable rear box, sun canopy and second rear view mirror.
‘James Bond’ rides a TGA Supersport ‘Harley Davidson’ mobility scooter in Bognor Regis
Jan 18th

'James Bond' (aka Steve Myall from The Mirror) riding a TGA Supersport from Mobility and Comfort, Bognor Regis
James Bond on a budget: Skyfall being filmed in Bognor Regis after cuts (via The Mirror)
His car’s an Aston Martin, his martini is shaken not stirred and his suit’s perfectly tailored – but perhaps not for much longer.
James Bond producers have had to slash their budget and are shooting in Bognor Regis after scrapping plans to head for six different exotic countries to make the next 007 film Skyfall.
Instead of distant locations such as India, China and Bali, they are using various UK beaches. Skyfall will also rely heavily on special effects and advanced sets at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire.
A source said: A source said: “To say some of the cast and crew are a bit gutted is an understatement. “Originally six different countries were selected to film certain scenes but after several technical and financial problems, it was decided to scale back and just use Turkey as the sole foreign location.
“As well as Pinewood’s incredible facilities, the UK has an array of amazing, untapped resources, and some stunning beaches particularly along the south coast and parts of Wales.
“While Bognor is hardly the most exotic of locations, it is important for the franchise that they support British industry, and give something back.
“Everyone is confident this will be one of the best Bonds ever.”
After repeated delays, filming began two months ago – with Daniel Craig, 43, as Bond for a third time – and it is due for release in November. Scenes have also been shot at London’s Charing Cross and Canary Wharf. Craig is the sixth actor to play the British spy on the big screen, taking over from Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan. His first outing, in Casino Royale, was the most successful installment in the franchise’s 48-year history, taking £385mn at the global box office.
Savings Bond – Steve Myall (from The Mirror) as 007 in Bognor
So James Bond has been hit in the holster by the dire world economic problems and has had to cut his cloth accordingly. To help with a few ideas I put on my Moss Bros dinner suit and headed to Bognor Regis in West Sussex to create Dr No (Money). It was quieter than a Walther silencer so for a bit of action I headed to an arcade shoot ’em up. Next on the beach I tried out a few iconic poses but as it is a family resort I swapped the trademark gun for a stick of rock.
The pace isn’t exactly fast among the retirement heaven so no need for the Aston Martin – instead I borrowed a TGA Supersport scooter from Mobility and Comfort.
Local Susanne Donnelly said: “You don’t look anything like Daniel Craig. Are you the budget version?” Exactly. I then tried out some fitness equipment in West Park, as I need to lose a few pounds to fit into my trunks.
After checking the beach huts for foes I headed for my hotel – Butlin’s. But Moneypenny had made a mistake – it was closed. I wanted to try out the state of the art telescope on the beach but was stymied – Q hadn’t sewn any 50p pieces into my luggage.
Hungry I went searching for champagne and caviar for two – no dice – and ended up with chips and tea at the Beach Restaurant. Finally time for a proper drink – a budget alcopop in a seaside pub – more A View to a Hangover than A View to a Kill.
